Catching A Silent Killer

You can’t see it, you can’t smell it and you can’t taste it, but it can take a life within minutes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that can be emitted by common household items – like a gas furnace or a water heater – without anyone knowing it. Shockingly though, only 50% of Americans have CO alarms installed in their homes. And, 61 % of Americans can’t identify ANY signs of CO poisoning risk in the home.

Known as the “silent killer,” CO poisoning kills 500 people and sends 20,000 more to the hospital each year.  Commissioned by Underwriters Laboratories – a 115-year-old product safety organization, the survey overall finds that Americans might be over confident in their ability to protect themselves and their family from CO poisoning.

Additional startling survey results include:

  • 60% of Americans are confident they can prevent CO poisoning, but approximately two-thirds don’t know which common household items like hot water heaters (70%), charcoal grills (56%), and portable generators (54%), and can potentially emit CO
  • 80% of consumers can’t identify that rusting on flue pipes – one of the most telling signs – is in fact a risk of CO poisoning in the home
  • More people said they can name two “American Idol” judges (56%) than two items in the home that emit CO (45%)
  • 62% of Americans don’t know that the flu – including the H1N1 – is the most comparable to the symptoms of CO poisoning

To help educate our readers on the dangers of CO poisoning, UL has an extensive list of safety tips consumers can follow to protect themselves and their loved ones against CO. Some of UL’s safety tips include:

  • Have a qualified technician INSPECT fuel-burning appliances once a year
  • PROTECT your home by purchasing and installing a CO alarm
  • Be prepared should your CO alarm DETECT a problem

Head to www.ul.com for more life saving tips. More details from Underwriters Laboratories to come!

Method Laundry Lightens the Load

If laundry day wasn’t inconvenient enough, add the cumbersome (sometimes crippling) ginormous laundry detergent jugs and you can understand how some of us procrastinate until the point we are wearing bathing suit bottoms for gotchies.

The whole process is a pain. Lug those laundry jugs through the grocery store, back home and then (if you are like me) up three flights of stairs to my fourth floor laundry room. By that time my biceps are burning and my back is out of whack. No fun.

Thankfully the smart people at Method heard our desperate pleas and created a way to lighten the load on laundry day. They have created the world’s smartest laundry detergent. It’s light as a feather, doesn’t drip at all and packed with smartclean technologyTM, a 95% plant-based biodegradable formula that is super powerful on stains and ultra concentrated. Translation- 4 pumps per load = happy Jen.

Responsible packaging is always a big one for me and they’ve nailed it. When I checked it out they report a 35% smaller footprint with the new detergent. Buy it in 25 load or 50 load increments at methodlaundry.com in fresh air, peony blossom or (my favorite) free & clear.

Try it once & you’ll never go back to the wasteful, back-breaking, sloppy alternative. Once again Method makes life easier.

Growing Healthy Kids

INAUGURAL GROWING HEALTHY KIDS MEET & GREET BRINGS TOGETHER TOP 30 CHICAGO CHILDREN FOOD ADVOCATES

One in three Illinois children is overweight or obese[1], a terrible problem that is even more pronounced in the City of Chicago. According to the Community Food Security Commission, 1 in 3 children will develop type 2 diabetes due to their diet[2]. Several dedicated organizations exist in Chicago working to stem this tide and usher in a new way of sourcing, providing and thinking about food.  They gathered this Sunday at Logan Square Kitchen for the inaugural Growing Healthy Kids Meet & Greet to harvest relationships to grow the city’s efforts and results.

Spearheaded by Melissa Graham, founder of Purple Asparagus, a non-profit dedicated to
bringing families back to the table, the event focused on bringing together all city groups dedicated to educating children about nutrition, gardening, the environment and, in general, how to lead a healthy, sustainable life.  “We wanted to provide non-profits working with Chicago kids around issues of food and wellness an opportunity to meet and learn more about one another so that they could find ways to collaborate.  The issues facing our city’s children are huge and daunting and not one organization can solve them alone”, states Graham. In addition to non-profits, the gathering brought in other active school lunch partners like Chartwells Thompson Hospitality, the main food service company for Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

Many of the organizations present work specifically with CPS to improve kids’ understanding of where food comes from and how it affects their health. Resources are always at the forefront of obstacles to changing school lunch offerings and many voiced concern about the awareness for the renewal of the Child Nutrition Act. Current funding for the average school lunch is about $1. President Barack Obama has asked for an additional $1 billion in funding which would mean about 30 cents more per lunch[3]. Chartwells discussed successes they have had in working with several schools to introduce changes within the schools’ guidelines.
